The Angel: Summary

The true story of Ashraf Marwan, who was Egyptian President Nasser’s son-in-law, and special advisor and confidant to his successor Anwar Sadat, while simultaneously one of Israeli Intelligence’s most precious assets of the 20th century who made peace between Israel and Egypt.

The Angel: Plot

During a six-day-long war in 1967, Israel conquers large areas of land including the Sinai peninsula which previously belonged to Egypt. Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser wants it back from Israel. But his son-in-law (who he hates and urges Mona her daughter to divorce him) disagrees with the way he wants to do so. Ashraf suggest preventing further bloodshed and try a diplomatic solution with Israel, with the US as a peace-broker.
Nasser also has Ashraf being followed when he goes out with friends, with these and few other insults Ashraf feels humiliated and decides to call the Israeli Ambassador to share important information.
Following President Nasser’s death of a heart attack, Ashraf and his family are recalled to Cairo and wins Anwar Sadat’s (the next president of Egypt) trust by uncovering high-level corruption within the Egyptian government and slowly climbs the political ladder.
Back in London, when Mossad agent blackmails him with the recording of his call to the Israel embassy, he becomes Israeli’s asset and begins to sell his country’s secrets to the Israeli government in exchange for money but he had some other plan and worked on the strategy of the boy who cried wolf and also few other political decisions lead to the peace treaty which heralds a period of lasting peace and sees both Sadat and Menachem Begin received the Nobel Peace Prize.
Ashraf died mysteriously in 2007 when he fell from the balcony of his London flat. He is the only man to be recognized as a national hero in both Israel and Egypt.
