Roohi Movie Review :

Two small-town boys Kattani and Bhawra tasked to kidnap a bride but lands in trouble when one falls for her  and the other for the spirit possessing her.

Roohi Movie Review – Plot Summary

Roohi starts with Kattani and Bhawra Pandey introducing a foreign journalist to bridal abductions in their Uttar Pradesh town. Girls over here are routinely kidnapped by contract kidnappers who were told to hand over women to the families interested in marrying them. So, one day, Kattani and Bhawra were instructed by their boss to kidnap a woman named Roohi. After certain incidents, the protagonists discovered that she is possessed by a Chudail who only rest when she will marry someone. Here the movie takes an unexpected turn when the family assigns to kidnap Roohi canceled the marriage. So Bhawra and Kattani are asked to take her to an old factory in Ambiapur. Eventually, Bhawra falls for Roohi, and later on, the film is driven by his desire to unfetter her from wretched existence.

Roohi is streaming in Netflix.

Roohi Movie Review – Analysis

The movie is a sequel to the 2018 Bollywood movie Stree directed by Hardik Mehta. As we all know before Stree Bollywood didn’t work much in the horror-comedy genre, but Stree was a superhit film so I expected quite a lot from Roohi. If not better than Stree, then at least equal. But the plot is very cliché where female spooks on their head, particularly to cock a snook at the widely relevant social myth that men are women’s redeemer and that marriage. The movie wanted to deliver a woman-friendly message contradicted by how the female ‘lead’ is confined to the sidelines through most of the proceedings on screen. Though the ending gave her more than most Hindi films grant female actresses. All I want to say, the movie could be a little more narrative. Since it’s a horror-comedy some parts of this film are really funny. Especially when Kattani was trying to mimic an exorcism that he saw in a Hollywood movie.

Roohi Movie Review – Performances

Coming to acting, Rajkumar Rao and Varun Sharma was brilliant as they are blessed with their comic timing and pitch-perfect expression. Janhvi Kapoor didn’t do much in her role. She is given next to nothing to do beyond look crazed while covered in prosthetic makeup or look helpless and innocent.

Overall, the movie remains true to its genre and packed with a good dose of entertainment.
