Coolie No 1

Romantic Comedy Drama – 2 h 14 m

Raju (Varun) pretends to be a rich man who is actually a coolie to get the love of his life Sarah ( Sara Ali Khan) as her father (Paresh Rawal) wants a millionaire boy for his daughter to get married. But somehow his secret comes out. What happens next is the rest of the story.

This film is a remake of the 1995 Govinda-starrer, also called Coolie No 1, which itself was a remake of the 1993 Tamil film Chinna Mapillai. Back in 1995, David Dhawan offered the lead role to Govinda. The coolie named Raju (Govinda) who falls in love with Malti ( Karishma Kapoor) by seeing her photo. Pandit Shadiram who gets belittled by Malti’s arrogant father Hoshiyar Chand. He promises Raju that he will hook him with her. He introduced Raju as Kanwar Raj Pratap Singh, a son of a rich businessman. Eventually, Malti falls in love with him but her father somehow gets to know about Raju’s truth.
The reason behind narrating the old plot is nothing has changed.

The new version of Coolie No. 1 didn’t have any back story. It directly drive into the actual movie tells the story of Raju (Varun) who falls in love with Sarah ( Sara Ali Khan). Her father (Paresh Rawal) wants a millionaire boy for his daughter to get married. Raj pretends to be a rich man but somehow his secret comes out soon. What happens next is the rest of the story.

Coolie No 1  Review:

Script analysis

Rumi Jeffery who is the very same script writer who wrote 1995’s Coolie no. 1’s script brought a little changes to make it more 2020’s. Like the previous movie was set in a village. Karisma was a ghaghra-clad gaon-ki-gori and wanted to set up a cement factory. In the new version the village has become Goa. Instead of the factory, it was a port and Sara was a city girl. But she probably has done a little better. Like in some scenes they didn’t have cellphones to communicate to each other. They see a man wearing a driver’s costume and still misunderstands him as a plumper.

Since the movie belongs to the comedy genre I would like to add the movie is superbly unfunny. Farhad Samjis dialogues are done real damage. The low IQ humour will make you cringe.

Coolie No 1 Review:

Performance

Performance wise Varun was pretty good. It is just the role which is familiar to us. If you are a Govinda fan you might not like the movie at all.
Sara Ali Khan looked beautiful but she played the role of decoration for the movie more than acting. Surprisingly, her voice sounds so much like Karishma Kapoor.
Sahil Vaid and Talasnia failed to gather a single laugh.
However, Paresh Rawal , Johnny Lever, Javed Jeffery, Rajpal Yadav managed to entertain a little.

Coolie No 1 Review:

Music and Direction

David Dhawan is rightly credited as the king of masala films. The movie has every bollywood tinges like action, drama, songs, comedy (cringe though), beautiful actress, colorful dresses. There’s nothing to see for the story. You will watch it for the performances. When you can watch it in 1995’s version then why the remake. The original version is a lot more funny than this.
So basically if you’re looking for something just for entertainment where there is no logic, intellect , this is the movie to go for. Crazy, outrageous, over the top at the same funny and entertaining.

Why to watch

  • Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan
  • Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever together on screen
  • Funny and Entertaining
  • Opposite Attract
  • Light hearted
  • Double Role
