Skater Girl Movie Review – Plot summary:
Jessica, a London-living young girl travels to a small village in Rajasthan to discover her late father’s childhood. She met with an old friend who is a teacher of a village school and while hanging with her, Jessica saw the village kids are obsessed over skating and decided to take an initiative to make a skate park in the village and giving the kids a chance to learn the sports. She forms a special relationship with a Prerna in the village, who is conflicted between what her parents want for her and her love for skating.
Skater Girl Movie Review – Plot analysis:
Directed by Manjari Makijany and script by his and sister Vinati Makijany, the story revolves around the teenage girl Prerna (Recheal Saanchita Gupta) who belongs to a poor family and lived with her parents and brother Ankush. This movie also explores how she experiences her first taste of freedom. However, on the other hand, Jessica who is an abroad living girl and has a high-power job at a creative agency comes to visit her ancestral village and shows interest in building bonds with the village kids. Sooner she became everyone’s beloved.
Skater Girl Movie Review – Our review:
This is the very first feature film by Makijany. Although, they previously worked as a second unit assistant director for films like, ‘Wonder Woman, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. Through their movie Skater Girl, they wanted to explore the character ‘Prena’ a poor village girl who discovers her first freedom with the skateboard. Also, they focus on the stereotypical mentality of Indian society towards girls. The movie has two tracks. Where we can see Jessica’s attempts to get funding for the skatepark, and on the other hand, Prerna’s attempts to carve out space in her life where she can skateboard when she likes. There are many intersecting issues on display: tradition and resistance, change and possibility, but the focus is on all of the societal pressure girls face—particularly poor girls like Prerna. It’s a great movie about skating which captures iconoclastic freedom and rebellion skateboarding has so often represented.
The director portrays skate as fun and not so much a road to fame and fortune but an open road where we see Prena’s and Jessica’s undiluted freedom, independence, and mobility. So the movie just not tells a story about passion for skateboarding, the movie actively helped in a real-world way, with real-world consequences to foster the love moving forward.
